Editorial policy and data sources
Where our listings come from, how we order them, what we verify and what we don't, and how we write our guides.
Where listings come from
| Country | Source | Verified? |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom (England & Wales) | Solicitors Regulation Authority register, via the SRA's data-sharing service | Yes. Firms marked "SRA authorised" are on the official register. |
| United States, Ireland and Europe | Overture Maps Foundation places data (CDLA Permissive 2.0), which combines public business listings | No. These are business listings. We link to the official register so you can check a lawyer's licence. |
Locations and postal codes use GeoNames (CC BY 4.0) and, for UK postcodes, postcodes.io (Open Government Licence). City names are standardised, and European cities use their common English names (for example Munich and Vienna). The directory was last rebuilt on 30 October 2026.
Practice areas
UK practice areas are those firms report to the SRA. For other countries, practice areas come from the business category in the source data, or are inferred from the firm's name (for example, "Smith Injury Lawyers" is listed under personal injury). They show what a firm says it does, not a measure of expertise. Always confirm the firm can help with your matter.
Which firms we show and index
- We show SRA-authorised UK firms, and active business listings for law firms in other countries.
- Listings the source marks as low confidence are excluded. Thin pages (cities or practice areas with fewer than three firms) are kept out of search engines.
- UK organisations that are not SRA-authorised firms, and closed firms, are only shown in search when you ask for them, and are not indexed.
How listings are ordered
- City and practice pages list firms by distance from the city centre, or from the location you searched.
- Elsewhere, verified listings come first, followed by the most complete listings (with practice areas and contact details).
- No firm can pay to be listed, to rank higher or to be featured. We do not take referral fees.
We do not publish ratings or reviews.
How we write our guides
Our legal guides are written by the Lawfindo editorial team to explain legal processes in plain English. We:
- base them on legislation and official sources, such as government websites, regulators and courts;
- say which jurisdiction a guide covers (US, UK or general), and note where rules vary, for example between US states;
- avoid quoting fees and thresholds that change often, and link to official sources instead;
- show the date each guide was last updated, and review guides when the law changes.
Our guides are general information, not legal advice. See our legal disclaimer.
Advertising
We may show advertising, including ads served by Google, to fund the site. Ads are labelled "Advertisement" and kept separate from listings and guides. Advertisers have no influence over our content.
Corrections and removal
If a listing is wrong, or you want your firm's listing updated or removed, contact us. UK firms should also update their details with the SRA.
